The Panama Hat was officially introduced in the early 20th century, but it’s inspired by South American weaving traditions that date back half a millennia. The hat originates in Ecuador, but takes its name from the Panama Canal — the workers who built the canal wore them for protection from the sun. Guanabana’s Panama Hat has a pinch front, wide brim and patterned band around the crown. It’s hand-woven from natural toquilla straw by Wayuu artisans using the traditional Colombian iraca technique. This is a hat with some structure to it, so avoid tossing it in your bag if you don’t want it to get bent out of shape.
Guanabana’s boho-chic designs are the realization of founder Almudena Espinosa’s dream to make a lasting positive impact on artisan communities. Founded in 2005 and based in Madrid, the brand’s entirely handmade styles showcase both her Spanish heritage and the techniques of Latin America. Fun fact: the name is an ode to Almudena’s favorite fruit, also known as soursop.
